Rome is the capital of Italy and stands as Italy's largest and most populous city - with more than 2.7 million people living there today. Rome is situated in the midwestern section of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio region of Italy. With a history dating back two thousand years, Rome was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. Rome is highly regarded and recognized as one of the birthplaces of western civilization. In 1871, Rome was established as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy and in 1946, Rome was established as the capital of the Italian Republic. After the medieval era, Rome was reigned over by Popes who changed the city into one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance (in addition to Florence). Today's St. Peter's Basilica houses the famed Sistine Chapel that was painted by Michelangelo. Other famous artists resided in Rome, such as Bernini, Raphael and Bramante - all contributing to the Roman Renaissance and the famous Roman Baroque architecture. Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world, the third most visited in the European Union and the most visited in Italy.
