Doing Business in Kortrijk
The Belgian city of Kortrijk is located in the Flemish West Flanders province, and is the capital and largest city of the arrondissement of Kortrijk, which is an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. The larger municipality consists of Kortrijk proper as well as the towns of Aalbeke, Bissegem, Bellegem, Heule, Kooigem, Rollegem, and Marke.
Forty-two kilometers southwest of Ghent, and 25 kilometers northeast of Lille (France), Kortrijk is located on the Leie. Both the cities of Lille and Kortrijk are a part of the same transnational Eurodistrict urban area, containing 1.9 million residents. With many schools, shopping districts and hospitals, Kortrijk is the largest city in southern West Flanders (Kortrijk was the very first city in Belgium with a pedestrian shopping street). During the Medieval era, Kortrijk grew as a result of the flax and wool industries with France and England, and also became one of the largest and most wealthy cities in all of Flanders. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Kortrijk was an important center of the flax industry and is still an important region within the Belgian textile industry today.
